What happens in your first reflexology session?
If you've never had reflexology before, it's natural to wonder what actually happens. Will it tickle? Do I need to undress? What do I say? After more than 20 years in practice, these are the questions I hear most often, so here's a simple walk through your first visit.
Before you arrive
Wear something comfortable. You'll only need to take off your shoes and socks, so there's no need to undress. Try not to come straight from a heavy meal, and give yourself a few minutes so you're not rushing in from the car park.
A gentle conversation first
We start with a short consultation. I'll ask about your general health, any medication you take, how you've been sleeping, and what's brought you to reflexology. This helps me tailor the treatment to you, and it's also where we check that reflexology is suitable for you right now. Occasionally I'll suggest checking with your GP first, and I'll always explain why.
It's also your chance to ask me anything. There are no silly questions.
The treatment itself
You'll settle into a reclining chair with a blanket, and I'll begin with some gentle relaxation movements on your feet. Then I'll work through the reflex points with my thumbs and fingers, using a steady, comfortable pressure.
Most people expect it to tickle, and it very rarely does, because the touch is firm and deliberate. Some areas may feel slightly tender, and that's completely normal. Just let me know and I'll adjust. Many clients drift off, and you're very welcome to.
Treatments can last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on what you choose. We'll agree what suits you best when you book.
How you might feel afterwards
Most people tell me they feel deeply relaxed, a little sleepy, or lighter. Some feel thirsty or a touch emotional, which is simply the body letting go. I'd suggest drinking plenty of water, taking things gently for the rest of the day, and noticing how you sleep that night.
Everyone responds differently. Some people notice a change after one session, while others find the benefits build over a few regular treatments. We'll talk about what might suit you.
Can I claim on my health cash plan?
I'm a member of the Association of Reflexologists, so many health cash plans and insurers will accept my receipts. It's worth checking your own policy before you book.
Where to find me
I see clients at my clinics in Dumfries, Lockerbie, Kelso and Cockermouth, and at my newest clinic in Moffat.
